Who Moved My Cheese?
Who Moved My Cheese?
by Dr. Spencer Johnson
Synopsis
Told as a simple parable, the story follows two mice — Sniff and Scurry — and two "littlepeople" — Hem and Haw — who all live in a maze, searching for cheese that represents whatever we want most in life (a job, a relationship, happiness, success). Every day they find their cheese at the same spot, until one day it's gone. The mice, being simple creatures, adapt instantly and head off to find new cheese without overthinking it. Hem and Haw, though, react very differently — Hem refuses to accept the change and clings to the belief the cheese will reappear, while Haw eventually realizes that fearing change is worse than the change itself, and sets off into the maze to find something new. Through their contrasting responses, the book becomes a short, easy-to-read metaphor for how people handle unexpected change — in careers, relationships, or life in general — and why adapting quickly, rather than resisting, tends to serve us better.
