The Metamorphosis

The Metamorphosis

by Franz Kafka

Okay so this one's just... strange, but in a way that sticks with you. It opens with maybe one of the most famous first lines in literature — Gregor Samsa wakes up one morning and he's been turned into a giant insect. No explanation, no buildup, it just happens. And honestly the weirdest part isn't even the bug thing, it's how fast everyone just... adjusts to it, or tries to.

Gregor's the sole breadwinner for his family, and once he physically can't work anymore, you watch his family's love basically shrink in real time based on how useful he still is to them. His sister starts off caring for him, his parents are horrified but trying to cope, and slowly, painfully, they all start treating him less like Gregor and more like a problem taking up space in the house. He's literally locked in his room while life outside just keeps going.

It's less a horror story and more this quiet, suffocating look at isolation, and how identity and worth get tangled up with what you can "do" for people. Kafka wrote it dry and almost clinical, which somehow makes it hit harder, not softer.

my verdict
