It's about a lonely, nameless narrator — basically a dreamer who lives more in his own head than in real life, wandering the streets of St. Petersburg at night because he's got no real friends or connections to anyone. Then one night he meets Nastenka, a young woman crying by a canal, and they start talking. Over four nights, this whole fragile little relationship builds between them — he's falling for her, hard, while she's actually waiting for another man who once promised to come back for her. What gets you is how much hope the narrator pours into these few nights, like he's finally being seen after a lifetime of being invisible to everyone, including himself. And then reality does what reality does.
